Getting permission to stay in contact is the first step in successful email marketing. Probably the easiest way to build a permission based mailing list is to add a list server to your Web site. A list server is software that automatically handles people being added to and people being deleted from your e-mail list.Using the list server, the customer controls whether or not they receive the e-mail. The visitor sees your offer to join the list. If they want to get on the list, they subscribe by giving their e-mail address. If they subscribe and later find out they don't want to receive the e-mail any more, they simply take themselves off the list by unsubscribing.
A list server helps you build a self-generated e-mail list. There are other marketing tools for getting the initial permission like opt-in mailing lists. Be aware, however, you are only working off someone else's permission temporarily. Consider a legitimate reason for you sending email to those on the list. What information are those users expecting?
Beware of sending email that may be regarded as SPAM. Sending to such a blast can get your e-mail turned off and your Web site shut down. It's not worth the risk.
After you grow or purchase a legitimate email list. Be courteous and patient in your email marketing. If users are signing up for a monthly newsletter. Send them an informative, quality newsletter only once per month. In that informative newsletter, you can mention current specials on goods and services to supplement your content. But remember that if your content is nothing more than a solicitation, your subscribers will not be on your list for long.
Do not forget about your subscribers either. If it's been several months since you sent them anything, they may not remember you. Keeping a fresh list will help nurture fruitful dividends.
